What is e-IEC and why it is necessary?

DGFT issues Importer Exporter Code in electronic form (e-IEC) where Application for issuance of e-IEC can be made instantly on the DGFT Website, the application process for IEC and up-gradation in IEC is entirely online and IEC can be generated by the applicant as per the procedure detailed in the Handbook of Procedure.

How to maintain e-IEC?

e-IEC must be updated on every year (Yearly Renewal). It is prescribed by DGFT that IE code must be mandatorily updated online every year even if there is no change. The said update/renewal must be carried out between April to June in every year. IE Code shall be de-activated if not renewed in time (may be post June). Once de-activated it may cause issues in export & imports of the e-IEC holders. Ministry of Commerce has made it mandatory to update IEC before 01.07.2021 (Refer Trade Notice 1/2020-21 dt.29.04.2021

An IEC may also be flagged for scrutiny. IEC holders are obligated to assure that any risks flagged by the system are timely declaimed, otherwise the IEC shall be deactivated.
